Life without a laptop is challenging to say the least! Unfortunately mine had back to back critical issues so it spent the almost a month with people that know a whole lot more about computers than I do! But I have it back now so I can finally finish what I started.....which translates into posting a few of our favorite pictures of Rome where we left our cruise and spent our last days before heading home back in June.
Sant'Angelo Castle and Bridge was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. The building was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle, and is now a museum.
One of our favorite spots which we went back to three days in a row was the magnificent Trevi fountain, beyond a doubt the most spectacular of all the Roman fountains.
We walked miles and miles and miles.....thankfully it had cooled off a bit from the early days of our cruise in Greece and Turkey.
It was amazing to see these famous sites, some of which like the Pantheon, were behind scaffolding as they were being restored and cleaned.....a never ending story. This great masterpiece of Roman architecture is one of the ancient monuments best preserved in the world and was built by Agrippa and then rebuilt by Hadrian in 130 A.D.
We had been told that the best way to see the Vatican was to take a tour and we were thankful that we did! It meant we got to bypass the long lineups for the Vatican Museums and St. Peters Bascillica.
The Swiss Guards had quite the uniforms!
The interior of St Peter's was incredible......gold everywhere and no paintings, only mosaics!
Bernini's Canopy....
The Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed in 1861 with Victor Emmanuel as King. The Victor Emmanuel Monument was built in 1901 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the formation of the united kingdom and offered an amazing view of the city from the top.
Another one of our favorite places to hang out and people watch while eating that delicious Italian gelato was the Piazza Navona,
Our hotel was just a few blocks from the Spanish Steps.
Too soon it was time to say goodbye and head for home....with the most amazing memories that we would savour for a lifetime!
