Choosing Contentment

This morning I could hardly walk around the Pond as we affectionately call the the creek in the park because of my pain levels. As I sat down to encourage someone else who was newly dealing with chronic pain, I searched for an article I wrote many years ago, only to find it was no longer accessible. So here's looking back....at something I have learned, am learning, and continue to learn about choosing contentment along this journey I would never have chosen.

Choosing Contentment

Pain is inevitable, but misery is optional. We cannot avoid pain, but we can avoid joy. God has given us such immense freedom that He will allow us to be as miserable as we want to be.” (You Gotta Keep Dancin’, by Tim Hansel)

“Your neck is unstable. It has begun to heal but the damage is done. I suggest that you make the necessary changes in your lifestyle.”

The doctor’s words sent my mind off racing. What would that mean for me? I listened as he continued his monologue.

“I suggest that you give up downhill skiing, sky diving, anything that would put your neck at risk…” I heard little else said that day. I was only 19, a university student with a desire to live each day to the fullest.

But now a car accident had left me in indescribable pain. As a result of the permanent soft tissue damage from the accident, I was unable to take as many courses as I usually did per semester. Nor did I have the strength to complete my performance degree in piano. There was little hope of life ever returning to normal.

Pain, misery, joy
We rarely think of those three words in the same context. Yet in my lifelong journey of living with pain, I have learned to do just that. It is really easy for me to focus on the negative circumstances of my life and complain about them. I can even justify why I complain about them. After all, I have a right to complain – I’m in pain everyday. But God instructs us in His word to “consider it all joy.” No exceptions.

I call it my journey of joy, and it wasn’t traveled overnight. Instead it has been a lifetime of learning through the various trials, disappointments and sufferings that my Heavenly Father has allowed to come into my life. Choosing joy, and in turn being content, is a discipline that we learn in our lives one step at a time. In the front of my daily planner, I wrote this statement: “God chooses what we go through. We choose how we go through it.” The choice is mine to make and it is true that I can be just as miserable as I choose to be!

Choices. That’s what joy and contentment is all about. We cannot change the circumstances, but we can choose how we respond to them. We choose whether we will be miserable because of them, or joyful in spite of them. The choice is always ours to make.

Here are four choices we can make that are the keys to living with contentment.
1.    Choose your focus – Charles Swindoll once said, “Your outlook on life is not determined by your circumstances, but by your focus.” Instead of looking at the circumstances, choose instead to look beyond those circumstances to God. I had to daily choose whether I would focus on the circumstance of living with chronic pain, or focus on God who has promised that His grace is all-sufficient. By choosing to keep your eyes on the Lord, you will get to know Him better and it will become easier to trust Him in every situation.
2.    Choose joy – Again, I have a daily choice to make of whether or not I will “consider it all joy.” And although I cannot choose for a lifetime, I can choose to rejoice in the Lord and His faithfulness one moment at a time. I can ask God to restore to me the joy of my salvation (Psalm 51:12).
3.    Choose to laugh – It has been said that he who laughs, lasts. Don’t take yourself too seriously and whenever possible, laugh at yourself! There is a reason why Proverbs says that a cheerful heart is truly good medicine (Proverbs 17:22).
4.    Choose to cultivate a thankful heart – Never doubt the goodness of God toward you. Begin to daily look for those things that you can be thankful for. Start with looking for one thing every day, and then increase the number of things. This is a discipline that requires diligence. Even in difficult circumstances, look first for something for which to be thankful. Remember, that God is never surprised about anything that happens in our lives.

For those who struggle with chronic pain, having an attitude of gratitude is difficult because the first thing that hits you every morning is how much you hurt. You’re not even sure you can get out of bed if you wanted to get out of bed. There is a deprivation of energy. But you can learn in the midst of the chronic pain to choose joy and to be thankful. Focus more on what you can do than what you can’t. Although physical pain is part of my everyday life, I have a choice to make. I choose to celebrate life, to be joyful and to be thankful for each new day!

Without Christ in me I could never choose joy. It would only be a feeble attempt at positive thinking. The source of my joy comes from my right relationship with Him and it is He who gives me the power to make that choice even in the most difficult circumstances. As I trust Him with every detail my life I’m learning the secret of being content in any and every situation.

What about you? Is chronic pain keeping you from living a life of contentment and gratitude? It doesn’t have to be that way. You can have peace and fulfillment by being filled with the Holy Spirit. The first step is to make sure that Christ is really on the driver’s seat in your life and that you are allowing His Spirit to fill you and empower you.

Pray this simple prayer and by faith invite Him to fill you with His Spirit:
Dear Father, I need You. I acknowledge that I have sinned against You by directing my own life. I thank You that You have forgiven my sins through Christ’s death on the cross for me. I now invite Christ to again take His place on the throne of my life. Fill me with the Holy Spirit as You commanded me to be filled, and as You promised in Your Word that You would do if I asked in faith. I pray this in the name of Jesus. As an expression of my faith, I thank You for directing my life and for filling me with the

Present Over Perfect

She had me at the title....
and my dear husband knew it
when he picked the book up at a conference he attended!

It was like it was calling to me to be read,
never mind everything else on the pile of books
(and yes, if you know me you know that I always have a pile of books).

Present over perfect,
Leaving behind frantic
for a simpler, more soulful way of living.

As I read the forward I knew that this was a book for me,
one that would cause me to over and over again say,
YES!!! That's exactly how I feel(felt).

"Stop.
Right now.
Remake your life from the inside out."
(page 17)

This past year of living in intense pain
feels like that has been exactly what has been happening,
God has been remaking my life from the inside out.

He has taken this busy Grandma
who worked hard to make everything look just perfect
and changed me from the inside out.

My life is marked now by quiet, connection, simplicity...
there is a peace that defines my days,
a settledness, a groundedness.
(page 27)

God brought me to a full stop
and in the sitting still he has filled my soul with peace
...this is what He has for me for such a time as this.

An Unwanted Calling

”My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.”(II Corinthians 12:7

She had written to me because she was suffering with constant pain and really didn’t know if life was worth living this way anymore. As I prayed about what to say in my reply, God reminded me of the truth of his unique calling in my life….a call to suffering. Over the course of my life I had heard his call to ministry of various kinds in my life. But now it was different.

Much like Paul who prayed and asked God to remove the thorn in his flesh 3 times(2 Corinthians 12:7,8), I had asked God to take away the pain. Others had joined in that prayer, but his answer was always ‘not now my child, my grace is sufficient for you’. Friends and family alike struggled with that answer.

But as I sat in front of the computer that day I realized anew that God’s calling on my life right now was unwanted, yes, but still very real.  I could say like Paul, ‘Most gladly, therefore I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me.”(vs 10). His promises that his grace would be sufficient and that I could be content with that are a daily reality.

The pain has not left. But neither has my Heavenly Father. Christ in me means that I can choose joy and be at peace knowing that ‘when I am weak, then I am strong’(Verse 10b) His call on my life during this season is to shine his glory through a cracked and broken vessel and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that he has not forgotten me and very definitely still has things for me to do, a role to play, prayers to pray.

How about you? Is God’s call for this season of your life unwanted? Are you having trouble seeing his purpose and plan for your days? Remember that God hasn’t changed and still very much at work, indwelling you with the power of Christ each and every day!

Heavenly Father, thank you that I can know that Your power indwells me and Your grace is always sufficient for me. May I remember that when the circumstances of life threatens to overwhelm me. Amen.

Action Step:
Have you been resisting God’s call on this season of your life? Have you been grumbling and complaining, demanding that God change it? Take a moment to thank him that his grace is always sufficient even now and that he will be at work in and through you as you are faithful to that call.

A Beautiful Morning

The fall morning had dawned sunny and bright,
and I was overwhelmed by the beauty all around me.
As I walked around the trail with my friend
the song going through my head was an old one....

....Oh what a beautiful morning,
Oh what a beautiful day,
I've got a wonderful feeling,
Everything's going my way.

Oh the pain was still there
and I had to sit down for a rest after one round around the pond,
but I was reminded that God was good,
all the time,
even when life hurts and doesn't go quite according to plan.

The summer had been full...
full of friends, family, flights coming and going,
but also full of sorrow
as we said goodbye to a beloved uncle
on the Labour Day weekend.

In the midst of it all
there wasn't a  lot of time for writing or reflecting
as all my energy went into enjoying the moments...
because that's what chronic pain will do,
rob you of the joy!

But I am determined that I won't let that be the story of my life,
instead I will choose joy.
I will believe that every day is in fact beautiful, rain or shine,
and that my loving Heavenly Father daily reminds me
...That everything is going HIS way,
and that's good enough for me!

Yet Will I Trust You

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him.” Romans 15:13

A recent medical diagnosis had confirmed that the extreme pain that I was dealing with would be a reality in my life for the foreseeable future and left me with a choice. How was I going to deal with this new reality?

As I opened the book I was reading, I stopped to read the above verse on my bookmark.  It was as if God Himself was speaking to me through his Holy Spirit.
I grabbed my Bible to look it up in a different version… may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (NASB) God was promising that by the power of His Spirit, I could be filled with hope not just in spite of the circumstances I found myself in, but in the middle of them.

The question to me was, ‘Will you trust me?’. As I struggled with this He gave me this acrostic:
T- Thank God that He hasn’t changed. This isn’t a surprise to Him but He is still the same God and in control.
R- Rely on His Holy Spirit to fill and empower you to make the right choices.
U- Understand that the choice is yours, whether to trust Him or not.
S- Say it out loud, ‘Yes Lord, yet I will trust You!’ In this situation, this circumstance, even if it never changes, yet will I trust You.
T- Trust Him! He will empower you by His Holy Spirit and He will fill you with joy and peace as you trust!
What are you facing today? Has trusting God been a challenge for you?

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You that because Your Holy Spirit indwells my life and fills me daily, that I can choose to trust You in the midst of daily pain. Also, I can know that I can abound in hope by the power of that same Holy Spirit every single day and for that I am exceedingly thankful. Yet will I trust You dear Lord, fill me with your joy and peace. Amen

Action Step:
Is it hard for you to trust God today? What is the situation that you face that makes it a challenge for you? Ask God by His Holy Spirit to fill your life today so that you can in fact trust Him and allow Him to fill you with all joy and peace.
