Learning to Listen

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened you.” Matthew 7:7

Several couples were headed out of town when our friends who were arriving later got the call. “Help, we stopped at the side of the road and one of my wife’s shoes fell out of the car. Can you please keep your eyes open and see if you can find it when you drive up? It was orange.”

As we sat around the dinner table we prayed that the shoe would be found. We agreed that it was highly unlikely since no one knew for sure where it had been dropped.

Before long the message was received, the lost had been found!!

As we sat later and reflected on the incredible return of the shoe, we marveled that anyone should have been able to see that orange shoe by the side of the road, while driving past at full speed. While we were praying, so were the driver and his wife. They were looking, asking God to show them the shoe. And there it was!

We couldn’t help but see that God was the one not only answering all of our prayers, but also giving them eyes to see, and ears to hear, ‘Look, over there! There in the gravel…an orange shoe’. How many others had driven right past without seeing a thing. But as they were looking, they were listening for God’s voice to direct them as to where to direct their eyes.

Are you facing the impossible but have been afraid to ask God for help lest he not answer? Ask anyway, and then listen for his voice.

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you that you are speaking us today and every day. Help me not to be afraid to ask and then give me ears to hear your answer. Help me to recognize your voice when I hear it. Open my ears so I can hear. Amen.

This post makes me smile and I love the photo! Would that we asked God more often to "show" us( because He knows) and have ears to hear and eyes to see.
