Lessons from the Garden

The other morning I got back from my morning walk and got lost in my garden! Well, not really lost, but majorly sidetracked. Instead of going inside and getting to work, I heard the weeds calling my name, and grabbed my gardening gloves instead of my laptop for just a few minutes.
First I picked up the dead leaves and broken branches that had been blown down in a huge wind storm last weekend. Then I pulled out the weeds that are just starting to take root. It's so much easier in the spring when the soil is wet and their roots aren't that big yet.
I also had to pull out some new little perennials that were growing to close to my rose bushes who need light and room to grow. I had to make a choice about which plants I wanted to thrive and grow....perennials or Dave's beauties as we call the rose bushes.

As I worked in the flower beds I couldn't help but think about how the Master Gardener does the same things in our lives. He is the one that prunes the dead branches in our lives, those that aren't producing any fruit and are just in the way of what He wants to do. Then He pulls out the weeds, those things that sidetrack us from blooming like we were meant to do. Other times He pulls out things that we think need to be there, but in actuality get in the way.

As I finally headed into the house and my waiting laptop, I couldn't help but think that I needed to remember these lessons that I learned in the garden that morning. I asked God to show me what He wants to do in the garden that is my life. It might not always look like I think it should or perhaps want it to, but truly He does know me best. And the best part, He knows exactly how it is all supposed to look! Maybe not in this season, but definitely in the seasons to come!

Yes, I'm reading "The Ministry of Intercessory Prayer", by Andrew Murray. He writes the reminder that the branch wood which the vinedresser prunes is true, vine-nature wood...just not growth that will contribute to producing fruit. It was a great insight, as sometimes I feel like what God wants to prune means that it had no place in His kingdom at all. But all of my growth is from Him, and yet, some of it needs to die (be refocussed) so that my fruit will be more, and bigger....

Lovely garden - that's the Gardener's choice for us as well! Thanks for these lessons!
